Talking design
Yesterday, our Creative Director Graham Birch gave a talk to all the design students at NUCA (Norwich University College of the Arts).
An ex-Norwich student, he was asked to show some of his work from student days up till the present. He also offered tips for students about to enter the real world of work, including showing examples of emails that Radford Wallis have received that got it badly wrong!

Head to Head Pyjama Party
As part of The National Brain Appeal’s ‘Pyjama Party’ campaign we put on our PJs and nightcaps for our own fancy dress fundraiser: a Head to Head pub crawl.
Using our map and meticulously planned route we visited some of the finest ‘Heads’ in London (The Nags Head, The King’s Head etc) with just enough time to take some memorable photos.
Thanks to everyone who came along and to all those who have donated so far at: http://www.justgiving.com/head-to-head

PJs at the ready
We’ve just received a huge delivery of nightcaps into the studio ahead of The National Brain Appeal’s Pyjama Party event. They’ll be given out to fundraisers who are organising their own pyjama-themed event.
We’ve designed the branding for this campaign at www.pyjamaparty.org.uk

Designed with Pride
Over the last fortnight or so, we’ve been designing materials for gay, lesbian and bisexual community charity Metrocentre who marched at Pride London on Saturday.
Following on from the brief of “Equality. Diversity. Identity.” we created arrow shaped placards which highlighted that our sexuality is one of the many things that defines us as individuals.

Working with Farm Africa
We’re delighted to have begun working with Farm Africa. The charity helps African farmers to grow crops and bring them to market in order to begin solving widespread problems of hunger and poverty rather than just using food aid and handouts.
We’ve just designed their new annual review which sets out to subvert expectations of a charity working for Africa, using a concertina format on one side to show case studies of the charity’s work.

A marathon effort
At yesterday’s London Marathon, runners for The National Brain Appeal were cheered on like never before.
We designed new ‘cheerleader’ t-shirts, banners and customisable ‘message bubbles’ for the supporters to cheer on friends and family
Well done to everyone who took part to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.

Zero Harm
We are pleased to announce that we are developing a brand that helps save lives.
For years, construction has been accepted to be a risky business. However, in 2008, Balfour Beatty decided that they would no longer accept this and launched Zero Harm, which aims to ensure the risk of a serious accident is reduced and ultimately eliminated. Now Balfour Beatty is recognised as an industry leader in safety.
Over the past few months we have been working with Balfour Beatty on the Zero Harm brand… watch this space

An iconic site for the London Stroke Directory
This week, phase two of our online directory for the Stroke Association went live.
In addition to over 200 icons representing the many services available, we introduced improved accessibility functions and a ‘rate and review’ option for each entry.
Behind the simple exterior is a sophisticated content management system that allows individual organisations to update their entries, and enables the directory to grow as more organisations are added.

Good News
We are very pleased to hear that three of our projects have been shortlisted for a Design Week Benchmarks Award, the best in brand communication.
Our branding work for Lisbee Stainton, Fayre on the Square and Becrypt will be awarded at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in November (fingers crossed).

Fresh awards 2010
For the second year running, Stuart (pictured here with fellow judges) has spent the past few days judging the 2010 Fresh Awards, which showcases the best in creativity for agencies based outside of the M25.
At this pre-nomination stage, we can’t say too much but with over 50 different organisations having work shortlisted it’s proof that even in these budget shy days, there is still some lovely work being produced.
The nominations will be announced next Monday (16th August).

Lisbee spreads her wings
After a successful international tour supporting Joan Armatrading, Lisbee Stainton will headline her own tour in the UK and Europe from September.
Following on from creating her branding earlier this year, we have just designed her next single ‘Harriet’ (see right).
You can see a case study for Lisbee in the Branding section of this site.

Fayre on the Square
On Saturday, the sun shone for the National Hospital Development Foundation’s Fayre on the Square event.
A fun family day out to raise money for The National Hospital, crowds were entertained by sideshows and stalls in Brunswick Square, London.
We were there to enjoy the day, having installed signage for the event. Our giant hand and lettering cut from rolls of turf invited lots of interest – people couldn’t resist brushing their hands against the grass!
You can see a full case study in the Marketing section of this site.

New Blood
Mark and Stuart did their bit for the next generation today by hosting a portfolio surgery for design graduates at D&AD’s New Blood. They gave a series of one-to one crits, helping the graduates to prepare for interviews.
Back in the studio, Stuart also took part in Creative Roulette – an online initiative devised by A+B studio to connect graduates with industry figures. Students were able to ask questions or for advice over a live webcam.

Pecha Kucha
Stuart was recently asked to speak at Ravensbourne College’s Future Fit 2010 Industry Day. The twist in the tale was the Pecha Kucha format: 20 slides at 20 seconds each.
One of (you guessed it) 20 speakers last Friday, he was asked to talk about what inspired him to be a designer and give advice to students graduating now. And all in 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
Stuart would like to wish all the graduates he met success in their careers.

Judge & Jury
After much chin-stroking, our director Stuart has completed his day of judging at the 2010 D&AD global awards. It is the largest awards scheme for the design and advertising industries, rewarding excellence from tens of thousands of entries.
Invited to be a judge on the Illustration jury, he spent the day at Olympia discussing whether entries were worthy of awards or their inclusion in the much coveted annual.
You can see photos of Stuart in action on our Flickr gallery.

What we do?
Ideas, ideas, ideas!
We are a visual communications agency, committed to creating distinctive, quirky and intelligent (sometimes all three!) ideas that engage a specific audience, communicate effectively
and make the whole experience memorable.
Ideas that stand out.
Of course, to create a point of difference and shift opinion takes more than just great creative brains. Fundamental to the success of our work is understanding our clients: their design requirements, their brand or organisation's personality, tone-of-voice and objectives.
That's just the half of it. Then we have to understand our client's clients. They're part of it too. So we listen, question, listen, question some more,
and when required challenge our clients (sometimes with breathtaking tact). The deeper the understanding, the more effective the design.
Over the years we have built successful working relationships with organisations that vary enormously – from FTSE 100 companies and consumer-facing brands, through to UK and international charities. The projects themselves vary too: print, web, campaigns, logos. We love this variety, in fact we think it is important - it keeps us fresh and open-minded.
When we set out some 4015 days (11 years) ago, we aimed to see every job as an opportunity to create a great piece of work, whether a small brochure or a large multi-faceted branding programme. Happily, this hasn't changed. This
approach has delivered work that has been recognised for its creativity, shortlisted or winning many prestigious awards.
In fact we're up to 12th in the creativity 'league table'. No great shakes, you might say, until you consider that there are well over 600,000 registered design agencies in the UK. And we're a studio of 6, not 60. For us small is not just beautiful, but more effective.
Effective for our clients, most importantly of all. We get results. From successfully branding and marketing 10,000 sq ft of office space (leased to 3i within half the time allocated), to delivering an event marketing campaign that completely fulfilled its objective (100% ticket sales for all courses and workshops), we keep our creative thinking firmly rooted in business objectives.
